Tips for Neocities (or the general internet)

I've been active on Neocities for around... 8 months now? Here's some things I do to make my online experience as stress-free as possible!

  • Don't use traditional social media or limit your use.
  • Don't interact with kids / teens / minors.
  • Don't interact with people who think fandom or hobbies = required activism or politics.
  • Don't interact with people you have to walk on eggshells around. You should not be afraid to disagree with your friends.
  • Don't interact with people who demand you are obligated to do [XYZ] thing.

  • Neocities is a sandbox. If you aren't hurting anyone, don't be ashamed to have fun.
  • Don't be afraid to make bad art, code bad things, etc. We all have to start somewhere. Bad or unpopular art is refreshing in a world where everything is commodified.
  • Biggest piece of advice? Don't ever worry about the follower count here. That's social media think. Do things for YOU.
  • Popular things are usually popular for a reason (even stupid reasons), so there's no shame in liking popular things. However, it's refreshing seeing genuine passion with no other (social) intention. Again, do things for YOU.
  • Show, don't tell. Instead of trying really really hard to force people to have a certain impression of you, if you are something... it will naturally come through most of the time. Be yourself.

  • Website Ideas...
    • Make your graphics.
    • Scan in your own material.
    • Don't have your own material? Go to a used bookstore, thrift-shop, or library. Then find a scanner at said public library.
    • Fuck around with CSS / HTML.
    • Good at CSS / HTML ?! Make some themes for the rest of us!!!
    • Draw something and scan it in!
    • Give unrequested advice :D
    • Take some quizzes.
    • Rank some characters, books, seasons, WHATVER on a tierlist. Then write about your decision!
    • Got hobbies? Talk about them and share pictures!
    • Don't have hobbies? Poor as fuck? Go to the local library. (My library has a sewing machine you can borrow and free craft classes.) Learn things for free. Chess! Another language! Read free books!
    • Make a special webpage around an entire concept.
    • Share some recipes.
    • Write something!
    • Make an art gallery.
    • These are all things I thought about it in one sitting. DO WHATEVER YOU WANT! Will add more later.

  • Most people have the memory of a goldfish and care mostly about themselves.
  • Turning off your Neocities profile will easily kill most potential for drama.
  • You can moderate guestbook comments as well.
  • So essentially in the worst case scernario, if you 1) turn off your profile 2) turn off guestbook comments 3) don't break the rules, I don't think people can really do anything against you...
  • Need a break? TAKE ONE! Walk away. Seriously. It's very easy to take weeklong, monthlong, even yearlong breaks on Neocities.
  • You don't have to justify breaks or anything, really.
  • Guestbook comments are more special than Neocities profile ones (at least to me). I do use the social features though to comment on people's pages and keep up with updates easier than an RSS feed.
  • Send emails!
